Extension Home for the Elderly Sulgen
The extension of the Sulgen senior center not only creates an increase in space, but also upgrades the existing building in several respects: With a separate entrance from the outside, this part of the general areas of the senior residence is now also accessible to the public. In the so-called 'dorfkafi', snacks, cakes and drinks are served. Everyone benefits from the expansion of the menu and the longer opening hours: until now, there were few gastronomic offerings in the small Thurgau community of Sulgen. The senior residence gets a lively meeting place where restaurant guests, residents and visitors mingle. The residents can take part in the everyday life of other people and barriers are reduced. Working residents get a centrally located meeting point for lunch, coffee or aperitif.
The glazed extension was realized as a wood-metal construction. It brings a lot of light into the lower interior of the building. The special glass with inlaid wooden lamellas from Okawood has several advantages: the filtered incidence of sunlight minimizes the heat load. In addition, the louvered structure gives more privacy and a visual screen without preventing views in and out. The wooden structure does not require cleaning or maintenance, which it is like a grid between the insulating glass panels.
A terrace in front adds an outdoor area to the annex. In summer, the large sliding doors can be opened and an awning joins the annex and the terrace like a textile roof, outdoor area and indoor area merge into an airy large veranda.
